I’m looking for books with a romance plot or subplot where the romance doesn’t play out in the ‘best’ way. I want something to read that will fill the gap of the lack of much romantic/ close relationships in my life, but I hate reading cheesy success stories, because life doesn’t work out like that. Other books I’ve enjoyed are ‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’, and ‘A Little Life’ (though the ending was too much imo).
I just need a distraction for now, a book that will capture me, but also comfort me in some way. Dark themes are fine.

Are you looking for a modern setting? The first thing that came to mind is older, The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. It’s a sweeping family saga with complicated romance.
Kennedy Ryan’s books could a great option. Contemporary romance w/a lot of depth-takes on real world struggles/issues and dives deep w/no easy answers. You go through an emotional journey that has catharsis at the end.
Most historical romance aren’t cheesy.
