Hi all, I want to get into reading and have been looking for recommendations.
I have searched on this sub and found a few. "War and peace" I have bought, but bought a cheap version from a publisher that prints the text tiny so it's annoying to read. Unfortunately I bought a couple other books from this same publisher, "the Karamazov brothers", and "crime and punishment". I may end up reading these in daylight with my glasses on, but for now the text is too small to focus at night (my reading time).
I also bought the prince of tides but realised I read it in school long ago. So I won't be reading it again just yet.
Many of the book recommendations are old fashioned and I feel that, despite being excellent, they're not very inviting for non-readers.
I also saw project hail Mary recommended, which I read, and I thought that was good.
I'm just looking for a modern book that is a "must read". Project hail Mary wasn't a must read imo, despite being very good. I'm looking for a recently written book that is fairly easy to get into, but is also an incredibly good book.
The issue is that I don't know what I like. I haven't read a full book voluntarily in 15 years or so. I enjoy reading short horror stories but have always found horror movies to lack storylines and to rely on cheap jump scares to keep people engaged. I love mystery, where there's something unusual happening and nobody knows why. I think this is why I enjoy short horror stories like those on /r/nosleep.
Generally I find abuse and murderers to be the kind of stories I'm not interested in reading. Most crime books do not sound interesting for me.
So ideally I'd like to read a modern book about a mystery, something strange happening and nobody knows why, the mystery isn't revealed straight away. I prefer to avoid space but it's not a no-go.
I'm sorry the criteria is so specific. I hope you can find the book for me! Any recommendations?
