PLEASE READ BEFORE RECOMMENDING!
So, my taste in gothic books is a bit different from what I usually see people suggesting, so please read my description before recommending anything.
Here are the books that I've already read: Phantom of the Opera (of course), Dracula, Carmilla, The Vampyre (John William), Frankenstein and some of Edgar Allan Poe's tales
I love gothic novels that are slow and take their time describing appearances, settings, and emotions. I enjoy when the story just unwinds at its own pace.
I’m really into books that appreciate nature — snow, mountains, trees, the moon, the sun, all of it. If the author can spend pages talking about the night or the wind, that’s exactly what I’m looking for.
I also prefer light drama — grief, sickness, misunderstandings between friends or lovers — but nothing too intense that leaves you wrecked for weeks.
I'll like it more if it's in a castle (or at least have a castle involved lol), but I'll gladly read without it too
As for the Phantom of the Opera vibe, it’s not a must-have, but I’d love to see something with a similar feel. What I loved was how small and seemingly random actions or mysteries kept popping up, but the real reason behind them was only revealed much later, when you’ve almost forgotten about them. For example, something a character does that seems weird or superstitious is explained in a simple, logical way at the end. That sense of mystery, subtlety, and surprise is what I’m after — without things getting too dramatic or supernatural.
I just love Gaston Leroux's rhythm of writing in general!!
I do love the romance, but it's also not necessary.
And last but not least: NO DESCRIPTIVE SEX SCENES, and please tell me if there are any trigger warnings!
