For example, after reading Rebecca, I always suspect one day Maxim would murder his second wife – the narrator of the book, marry another 21 year old young woman, and tell her a story about ‘why both of my ex wives deserved to be killed’. If you think about it, the second wife is a much easier target than Rebecca, she is young and naive, easy to manipulate (if you can convince someone ‘I murdered someone but it was their own fault’ you can probably convince them anything…), extremely isolated, without a job, any family or friends outside of Maxim’s circle, an identity of her own, with an extremely low self esteem – she doesn’t even think her own name is worth mentioning! If Maxim just murders her and makes up a tale about ‘my young wife has run away with someone’, no one is ever going to suspect anything or care much about her disappearance…
