Any recommendations for engaging histories or biographies about Chicago city politics that explore the patronage, wheeling and dealing, rough and tumble nature, ie the “Chicago Machine?”
I’m good with either a history that traces developments or a political biography that illustrates the workings. Well-sourced and researched but not too dry.
What I am not interested in are ideological screeds about a failed city and why you’ll die in a hail of gunfire as soon as you step one toe across city limits.

The book named Boss it’s about the Daley run machine. It’s about how the political machine was run by Daley and is thoroughly researched.
