I am used to reading books that are a little more complex and wordy, or less wordy but a bit more unique in the style of writing – like Outlander (wordy and long), The Bee Sting, Conversations with Friends, The Lost Apothecary (an easy and enjoyable read but a bit more well rounded). I don't mean that in a self righteous way or an uppity way – I am in no means an English lit expert or arrogant book reader. I sometimes don't even get through all the books I start. But I do read books with quite busy and wordy descriptions or complex feelings. I found this book brilliant and I have read almost all of it in the space of two days. But I'm disappointed by the final chapters. the ending has felt like a rushed finish. Like all the build up and descriptions and uncertainty was halted with "well after that X,Y and Z happened, the end" . It was all going so well and the abrupt discovery of Verity faking it feels really incomplete. Then the letter has felt like a badly put together plot twist.

The way the last chapters are structured feels like the letter is an afterthought and you kind of forget all of the depth to the characters with that letter. It hasn't left me wanting to read more and hear more, it's left me feeling like the characters are a lot less interesting than I thought. Everything after Jeremy went up to tell verity to own up about faking it has been too sudden, too shallow and lacked suspense. There was no suspense. It felt like the book built up all this fear and secrecy for nothing. I feel like there should have been a bit more of a lead in to that moment, and a bit more depth. The connection between Lowen and Jeremy and all that chemistry felt like it fell away too, which doesn't sit well with them being in that room together. It felt like such an anticlimax. It was so good until then.

I am still reading. I just got to the letter from Verity which is the plot twist. But I really just feel like Colleen Hoover could have done better as her writing was so good throughout all the other chapters and I'm left feeling like I'm not interested in these people anymore. The depth hasn't been enough. There wasn't enough context to shock me. It felt like a pointless ending without a bit more depth and if someone said that Colleen Hoover had to wrap things up for a deadline with that chapter, I wouldn't have been surprised. I feel like there should have been more.

    Any thoughts?

You have mostly positive things to say about a Collen Hoover book. Trust me, no one is going to accuse you of being a book snob

This sub has an insane hatred for Colleen Hoover so I’m guessing you won’t get much of a balanced discussion.
