My friend and I have both been going through it recently, overwhelmed with life and a sense of hopelessness for a seemingly bleak future, so I was thinking that it could be a nice moment of respite to have a weekly book club with just the two of us. I was hoping for some suggestions on what we should read!
Books exploring the human condition, the spirit of human resilience in the face of the what seems like insurmountable odds, what it means to be human even in a world that tries to strip that humanity from you – could be interesting and maybe in line with how we are feeling irl, but more than anything I want a book that really encourages discussion. That gets you super invested in the plot and characters, both of which leave you with a lot to say, and make you desperate to know what happens next.
We love books with an interesting cast of characters and dynamics. We both really enjoyed The Secret History, even though we read it a while ago. I think “and then there were none” would’ve been a great suggestion, but I’ve already read it (and basically all of Christie). We both love the knives out franchise! I will say, we are both women who are a little more averse to “boys club” books or books that are very clearly from the lens of a man. This doesn’t mean the author can’t be a man…idk how to explain but iykyk 😭
The last book we read together was “parable of the sower” which was vastly interesting and extremely horrifying, but neither of us liked the subsequent books in the series.
I don’t want anything too slow (so maybe nothing that’s too philosophical). Basically, a really potent distraction. Any help would be much appreciated! (Btw I’ll also gladly take the slower, more philosophical suggestions of exploring humanity in a broken world for myself in solo reading 👉🏽👈🏽)
