There is an amorphous category of novel that lives in my head, something along the lines of "confrontation": usually groups of men in wilderness survival situations, a lot of moral ambiguity, violence, and philosophizing, and usually the protagonist confronting some sort of psychopathic villain at the end. Moby-Dick and Blood Meridian are at the top of the list, and other books include Deliverance by James Dickey, The Painter by Peter Heller, Goat Mountain by David Vann, The North Water by Ian McGuire, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, and to a lesser extent some horror/supernatural stuff like The Terror by Dan Simmons.

Obviously this genre of story is a bit subjective and based mostly on vibes. I'm also not at all opposed to a book like this focused on women characters instead of men, I just haven't happened to find one yet!

Do any recommendations spring to mind for a type of book like these?
