I’m searching for books set in the countryside, ideally offering glimpses of other, non-modern ways of living. The supernatural should be evident but subtle (and ideally folkloric) not full-on fantasy. Basically the sublime and awe-inducing pagan atmosphere of Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood, some Andrew Michael Hurley thrown in (but not Adam Nevill, I find him too blatant and non-subtle), a bit of Mythago Wood, with themes of hope and wonder (some good old wanderlust would also be great). I guess what I’m searching for could be considered “light and hopeful" folk-horror, in absence of a term for "supernatural-and-rural-narrative-in-our-world-but-focusing-more-on-awe-and-wonder-than-horror-and-misery" (folk-sublime?). Nice/eloquent/literary prose would a welcome plus.
