I'm looking for stories which are narrated by a kind of 'guest' figure who observes the actions and relationships of others but seems to be at one step removed from the events and there is a bit of a blank space in terms of their own life or involvement. I'm thinking Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, Nick Guest in The Line of Beauty, etc. Books where the narrator is brilliant at describing the lives of others but doesn't engage in much introspection about themselves.
Also books where the main character is seemingly unaware of aspects of their own reality, such as in Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
Thank you! x
