Here's an odd one. I often want to read a book in the evening that has a generally nighttime vibe. Books that have hit this for me recently include The Man Who Was Thursday (Chesterton, subtitled A Nightmare) and A Walk in the Lonesome October (Zelazny). Hard to describe what makes these nighttime books, they both have a kind of inexorability and strange, not-quite-dreamlike internal logic.
I know the natural thing here is horror, and that's fine, but I'd also encourage other recommendations.

the invisible library series by genevieve cogman feels very nighttime to me!!
also for some reason tove ditlevsen’s copenhagen trilogy seems fitting for this but maybe that’s because i’ve only read it at night so far
oh ALSO obvious choice, but the end of night by paul bogard. must be read only when it’s dark outaide
