Okay so, like the title says, I have a very specific type of book I like but I don’t know what it is exactly. My last 5 books are:
Where The Crawdads Sing
The Nightingale
The Great Alone
Demon Copperhead
Hillbilly Elegy (Not because I’m a Trump lover or anything. I do like books that are a bit more “raw”. Growing up myself just outside Appalachia with a single addict Mom bouncing around between Kentucky & Ohio was my beginning as well so I wanted to give it a shot. Again, not a Trump fan but I now like JD Vance because I know he gets it)
I’ve also learned I like John Green a lot so I liked Turltes All The Way Down/The Fault In Our Stars/Paper Towns. I absolutely LOVED WTCDS and The Nightingale/The Great Alone. I’ve finished The Four Winds and The Women too and it fit my tastes well. Beyond that, I have things in my library like John Douglas books and True Crime. I have Walden, Secret Life of Bees (I guess I’m a sucker for stories of struggle in the south)
I’ve started A Little Life but it’s painfully slow (I’m sorry to the diehards out there).
Yeah so, I don’t know what to call what genre I like. It’s sad, raw, gut wrenching, coming of age and poignant I guess.
I’m a 40yr old male so I believe my book selections aren’t typical. It doesn’t make sense to me either but I LOVE love and sad stories but I don’t want Romance stories. I like to read books I think my daughter would like so after I finish we can listen together on Audible on our way to/from school. It’s 45-60 minutes each way so audiobooks are great for that. I want to say my “genre” is coming of age depression porn but that makes me sound like I should be on a list 😂
If that sounds similar to your tastes (somehow) is there any recommendations? Favorite books, favorite authors or even favorite podcasts, I’d be very grateful. My go to True Crime podcast is True Crime Garage. Love those guys.
Thank you so much and sorry for the novel!
