crime / detective novels with very likeable investigator(s)

looking for crime / detective novels where the characters who investigate the cases are very likeable and easy to root for. I don't care, if they're (private) detectives, police officers or journalists or whatever.

I've read crime novels before that were very good and enjoyable, because of the case that was being investigated, but the people doing the investigating weren't as much of a focus. now I really want to read crime novels where the characters are super fleshed out and important to the story.

I'd prefer standalone works or a series that can be read as standalones is also fine.

nothing too gorey or explicit if possible.
