Maybe they were once in a position of authority or used to be powerful, respected, exceptionally cool, etc. but life beat them down and they're no longer the person they once were. One television example that came to mind was Obi-wan where the titular hero, one of the greatest Jedi in Star Wars history, became a fearful, traumatized older man who spent his days working a common job for low pay.
