Scifi/fantasy book or series where a main character goes through immense emotional and physical pain/trauma/difficulty and it’s well done.

I want it to feel genuine and not forced. I also want it to be relatable. I know it's fiction but I don't want it to be something that is difficult to sympathize with.

as far as sci/fi/fantasy goes it doesn't have to be that far out either, feel free for a more grounded setting, but not grounded is fine to as long as the characters are well written.

Edit: If a series, I want it to be complete. No unfinished stories. Thanks!
