I’m looking for horror books that are actually scary. I want to be scared to read it in the dark, and no, as much as I love him Stephen King isn’t scary. TIA
My go-to for this is House of Leaves by Danielewski. Book freaked me out.

My three favorites are:
“Penpal” by Dathan Auerbach – just steadily increasing *dread* from page 1.
“The Hollow Places” by T. Kingfisher – a woman staying with her uncle finds a doorway that leads someplace that shouldn’t exist. Again, just a lot of tension and dread.
“Just Like Home” by Sarah Gailey – a woman returns to care for her dying mother in the house that her father built. Her father, the serial killer. Unsettling and will leave you lying awake *thinking* about it afterward. :shudder: Best horror novel I read last year.

I’ll never not recommend The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp. Truly the only horror book to creep me out and have me thinking about it weeks after finishing it.
