Looking for books in which grief and mourning in the aftermath of loss are a central theme — not interested in self help type books, more books that explore these themes/how different people process through the narrative. Books I've enjoyed that I would put in this category include:
Wolf Hall (Hilary Mantel)
The Buried Giant (Kazuo Ishiguro)
The Death of Vivek Oji (Akwaeke Emezi)
My Year of Magical Thinking (Joan Didion)
Been on kind of a sci fi kick lately so bonus points for something in that space but any genre really! Thx

I haven’t actually read these books, so take my comment with a grain of salt. I lost a parent a couple months ago and I put them on my list to eventually read when I’m ready.
Grief is for People by Sloane Crosley (memoir)
Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner (memoir)
The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer (fiction)
Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune (fantasy)
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (horror/sci-fi/fiction)
Anything by Jeff Zentner and Matthew Quick. They’re amazing!
*Sweet Bean Paste* by Durian Sukegawa.
Neither of these are Sci Fi but Bright Young Women covers complex grief and people dealing with tragedy really powerfully. The Kite Runner both in direct mourning and wider grief and loss.
On The Beach or the Road as well as wildcards but both their depictions of grief stayed with me a long time.
This Thing Between Us, by Gus Moreno – it might seem an odd choice for a surreal horror novel to actually be a profoundly moving exploration of grief, but that’s what I came away with after reading it.
