I’m just starting out reading after many years of not. I like stories about humanity, anything that would make me cry, romance as long as its not too cheesy. I guess any of your favorite short story books that would keep me hooked is good.
For reference the most recent book I read was Flowers for Algernon and i absolutely loved it. 10/10
Thank you in advance!

Shit Cassandra Saw (short story collection)
In my opinion Ted Chiang is the master of the short story, a few authors can hit his level with a story or two, but his entire collections are fantastic.
Exhalation was his collection I enjoyed the most so I would start there, and he’s got a second collection published too.
His stories lean soft sci fi and fantasy but a lot of the focus is on character rather than setting.
my favourite short story is all saints’ mountain by olga tokarczuk, about the crossroads between science and faith or the unknown (here in full https://hazlitt.net/longreads/all-saints-mountain) but it is quite different from the one you mentioned so i’m gonna say as well tessa hadley’s latest collection “after the funeral” and “shoko’s smiles” by choi eunyoung 🙂
The Overcoat – Nikolai Gogol
A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway
Just a few pages long, but absolutely worth reading
Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine
