Historical fiction set in central Europe not set during the world wars?

Hello, I have a family member who is traveling to Germany, Austria, Poland, et cetera. She would like to bring a book that will immerse her in the history of the area. Any book recommendations regarding the history of this area that are not set during WW I or II? We think it important to learn about the history of a country/area beyond a period of massive atrocities – I am sure there is a rich history that has been overlooked! Preferably set within the last 300 years. Thanks!
