My favorite genre is what I would describe as "Period Telenovas" where it's a non-modern setting that reads like a telenova or soap opera just lots of sort of petty drama and infighting or even a GOOD will they or won't they.
I know some people may not describe "A Game Of Thrones" that way, but that's how I see it… the petty scrobbles, the different POVs, etc. and at the end of the day, Game of Thrones is just a bunch of families pettily fighting with each other.
In Pillars of the Earth, when >! that lady shows up with the chicken and curses the wedding !< that was chefs kiss to me.
What I liked about Gone with The Wind… Scarlett. She was so petty; I loved her.
Third person, past tense, only, please.
No need to suggest the following:
- Gone with the wind "sequel"
- Ken Follet's other works (I've read them, and found them repetitive)
- The rest of the Game of Thrones series (read them.)
THANK YOU FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS! Don't worry about the book being dark, I like that. 🙂

I think Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones might be exactly what you’re looking for.
*Wolf Hall* by Hilary Mantel is petty (and yet not) in all the ways *Game of Thrones* is.
