Okay I’m really hoping this subreddit can help a gal out. I’ve recently gotten back into reading and I started with ACOTAR, and have also tried Powerless by Lauren Roberts and Fable by Adrienne Young, but nothing is really scratching the itch that I have…
I love this genre, and also historic romance, and Fairy tale retelling, but I find many of the suggestions for “Romantasy” that I find on social media are definitely more geared towards a younger audience. I’m early 30s and I find I’m still searching for books in this genre that have magical worlds, adventure, mystery, romance/spice, but also a more sophisticated style of writing and an engaging story that appeals to someone my age. I’m struggling to find FMC in these books that aren’t teenagers and are closer to my age.
For example: Outlander is something along the lines I think I may enjoy vibe wise? Maybe?!
The Books I absolutely LOVED when I WAS a young adult were the Inkheart trilogy, the Thief Lord, the Royal Diaries series, and the Once Upon a Time series. They were wonderfully written and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.
i’m looking for something that has those magical vibes but more adult in tone.
Hopefully I’m making some sense here? 😅
Thank you guys ahead of time!

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire sounds it would be more to your liking. The whole series is great, I definitely recommend it.
*Sabriel* by Garth Nix
*War for the Oaks* by Emma Bull
Have you read any T Kingfisher yet? I loved Swordheart and Nettle & Bone, and I’m currently half way through her Saint of Steel series. I love her characters. Highly recommend her books to fellow 30 somethings!
Try Honeycomb by Joanne M Harris – unique intertwined fairytales that do have an element of romance (but it’s not spicy). I thought it was really well-done and the illustrations are lovely
