I tried searching around and people tend to recommend big names in horror like The Shining and classics like Frankenstein. They are both very good books and I'm not discrediting how well they were written and how influential they are in their own right, but is this really as scary as horror gets? I think google and AI chats are not distinguishing between "scariest novels" and "most beloved scary novels".
I like shorter books like novellas so ideally it's not longer than 150 pages but I'm not adamant about this. What are some books that you as a horror fan say are well-written and exceptionally scary?
