Should Lonesome Dove be my first-ever western?

I've heard good things about Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, and I wanna read it, but it would honestly be the first western book I've ever read. I'm not sure if it's a book that you should only read if you're deeply familiar with western novels or not; sort of how Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven shouldn't be someone's first western movie. Could it be an intro to the genre?
