I'm reading "House of Salt and Sorrows" by Erin Craig. It's been recommended many times as I've been looking for and reading a lot of spooky Gothic house books. It's just not…. grabbing me. I'm about 25% of the way through and I just don't find it immersive. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on why. People seem to like it.
To be clear, I don't want to just complain about a book. I'm wondering, in general, why some writing just falls flat. What makes a book vibrant? What makes it beautiful or immersive or memorable? What is it that makes you FEEL? And why do some books lack that? Or is it different for every reader?
Even books that I don't particularly like can be worth reading for the experience of it. I'm struggling to articulate the difference or pinpoint it within the text.
Thoughts?
