I'm reading "House of Salt and Sorrows" by Erin Craig. It's been recommended many times as I've been looking for and reading a lot of spooky Gothic house books. It's just not…. grabbing me. I'm about 25% of the way through and I just don't find it immersive. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on why. People seem to like it.

To be clear, I don't want to just complain about a book. I'm wondering, in general, why some writing just falls flat. What makes a book vibrant? What makes it beautiful or immersive or memorable? What is it that makes you FEEL?

Even books that I don't particularly like can be worth reading for the experience of it. I'm struggling to articulate the difference or pinpoint it within the text.
