Hi everybody! I belong to a book club of mostly 80yr olds (I am the youngest by 30+ years). They are super well read, really hip and modern ladies. I can’t even begin to tell you all how much joy the club brings to my life! Heart, heart!! Now, the month of October will be my month to recommend some books. I am certain that horror is not their bag (nor mine). But I would like to suggest some slightly spooky books for Spooktober. Every time we read something outside of our normal genres, we have amazing discussions! I’m looking for anything witchy, or ghostly, or slightly eerie or a little creepy, maybe a bit of mysticism? IDK. Just something that may bring hesitation when turning the page…but no gore or horror.
Thanks in advance for anything you may have in mind!!

In Calabria by Peter S. Beagle. This may be ideal for the group because it is scary in fantastical ways, but not overly so. Beagle writes beautifully and this story is on the shorter side — so it won’t be a huge investment if it’s not their cup of tea. A little bit of romance thrown in, but that’s not the focus. Hope that helps.
*The Thief of Always* by Clive Barker
rebecca by daphne du maurier
rosemary’s baby by ira levin
the woman in white by wilkie collins
wuthering heights by emily bronte
phantom of the opera by gaston leroux
