I’ve not read Dresden or Rivers of London, but my top picks for urban fantasy:
Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series, beginning with *Rosemary and Rue* – about a half-fae detective/knight errant who keeps getting caught up in supernatural mysteries while having to navigate the complexities of modern fae politics. Extremely well-constructed with lots of re-read value.
Also by McGuire, the InCryptid series, beginning with *Discount Armageddon* – about the latest generation of a family that left an ancient order of ‘monster’ hunters in order to become ‘monster’ anthropologists/conservationists. The series switches POV characters every few books, which helps keep it feeling fresh. McGuire’s Ghost Roads series, beginning with *Sparrow Hill Road*, also takes place in the same setting.
Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series, beginning with *Spider’s Bite* – about a magic-wielding assassin with a heart of gold and a personal grudge against the city’s biggest crime boss (also an extremely powerful elemental).
LoneWolfette on
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Witch-for-hire on
I have read both of these series and I also like them (although I am not very happy with power creep – I was more happy when Harry was investigating more smaller cases) …. so thanks for this thread, I might also find something to read later 🙂
– the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka is supposedly the closest to the Dresden Files
