I love absolutely everything by Bill Bryson, in particular because I remember things better when they are easy to read and/or funny.
I'm hoping for some similar toned books on history, science or politics.
Some topics I'd be particularly interested in:
Wars
French revolution
History of specific counties or regions
Industrial revolution
Technological/digital revolution

You might find the books of William Dalrymple or Anita Anand on India, interesting. I have been listening to their podcast, Empire, on Spotify and I have found their manner scholarly but also fun and captivating.
If their books are as good as the podcast (the reviews of the books look excellent as well), they might interest you.
If you want to try before you buy, you could listen to the podcast on Spotify for an hour beforehand. If it interests you then maybe you could feel more confident about buying one of the books.
