You follow the protagonist in their endeavor to reach their goal, but each plan, not matter how cunning and well crafted it is, each plan fails either tragically or comically or both at the same time. And so the protagonist tries again with a new 'great' idea. Like Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner meet Anne of Green Gables.

Don Quixote.
This happens so often in the book, there’s a trope named after it. A quixotic action is a pointless one that you will fail at.
