I’ve been craving some books set in Ancient Rome, but everything I run into seems to either be a romance or a mystery, and while I don’t have anything against those genres, they’re just not for me. Likewise, I massively prefer books about the poor or enslaved. Please no religious / inspirational fiction, either (sorry, *Quo Vadis*).
I have read *I, Claudius*, the *Wolf Den* books and *Sparrow.* Things with the general vibe of *The Wolf Den* and *Sparrow* are A+++

Rosemary Sutcliff’s best books are set in Roman Britain. *The Eagle of the Ninth* offers a great perspective on the Roman empire and slavery, with the main characters being a Roman ex-soldier and his British slave-turned-best-friend. The story is about friendship, conflicting loyalties and an adventurous quest — highly recommend!
