Lewis himself called Till We Have Faces far and away his best book and I agree with him. This retelling of the Cupid-Psyche myth, told confessional style by the barbarian Princess Orual, Pysche's half-sister as she reflects back on her life and deeds. Lewis captures the flavor of the ancient world in convincing detail and draws characters who are complex and compelling. Orual is an unreliable narrator of the sort who through her own df defense of her actions reveals the motives and errors that she has hidden from herself.
This is a rich and lovely story and a great novel.
