My wife and I have a monthly book club just for the 2 of us. She loves thrillers and true crime and horror. Ghost stories/gothic horror is probably the most fantastic kind of story she would choose for herself.
I want something a little more fantastic, maybe even some sci fi or fantasy but I want to make sure it’s engaging for the both of us. It’s okay to go dark with this, she definitely has a very high tolerance for that, probably even higher than mine.
What books jump into your mind? What do you recommend to the people in your life who like thrillers to get them into other genres?

* The City and the City by China Mieville
* The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
* The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch
The *Expanse* series by James Corey has a main character who is a detective looking for a missing person.
*Great north road* by Peter Hamilton is in large part a murder mystery in a scifi setting. Just be aware this one has a subplot where a cop stalks a woman and manipulates her into a sexual relationship but the book plays it off as quirky and romantic with no critique of the cop’s actions, so that’s something you’ll be subjected to. There’s probably not more than 20 pages dedicated to this subplot but they’re spread around the book and fucking creepy whenever they appear (and not in an intentional diegetic way).
Dead silence by SA Barnes or Ghost station by SA Barnes jumps to my mind. Horror in space with some supernatural elements.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia or The Hacienda by Isabel canas are both gothic horror with ghost elements that keep you on the edge of your seat. They also have great imagery of Mexico in different eras.
