Lately I've been feeling the itch to read another classic adventure/exploration/man vs. nature type book. There's a vibe to a specific time period and genre that can just hook me in.
Some examples of books I have read that fit the kind of vibe I have in mind are Aztec by Gary Jennings, The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux, Don't Stop the Carnival by Herman Wouk, and even Dune by Frank Herbert, though I'm not as interested in sci-fi at the moment.
Some traits I'm looking for (obviously it need not include all of these):
-Written between 1960-1980
-Involves a jungle or expedition to foreign or unknown places
-Historical setting
-Epic in scope/feeling
-Single novel (not a series)
Anything come to mind? I've been considering Shogun by James Clavell (I have not seen the show), but I'd like to hear any thoughts you fine folks might have!
