Preferably by an American (we can use that term loosely!) author written after 1900 — I’m compiling a list of American novels for a graduate field exam list that will showcase masculinity and/or masculine friendship! I have lots of Morrison, Steinbeck, Hemingway, McCarthy, and Wright on this list, as well as some “not so canon yet” authors like Colson Whitehead, Khaled Hosseini, Pat Conroy, and S. E. Hinton! 🙂
