Which pre-1900 book would compare well to the Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck in terms of social class?

At the moment I’ve been contemplating stuff by Dickens or Austen but I’m not so certain if there’s a gem that I’m missing. If it makes any difference, this is for an essay I need to do.
