My family is going through a rough time with my little boy needing several big surgeries.

Things have calmed down a bit and, without panic driving me, it's like my brain doesn't know what to do. I feel like I don't know how to be calm.

I'm an academic and so I read all day for my work. However I find I'm not able to concentrate on TV. I think I need to read something that's really distracting and engrossing. A real page turner – doesn't even have to be serious or meaningful. In fact, the less meaningful the better. A true escape.

    Please suggest me some books!

    1. Okay, so *Fourth Wing* is kind of trashy but that author knows how to write a book you feel absolutely compelled to keep reading.

If you are good with YA, try *A Deadly Education* by Naomi Novik or *The Inheritance Games* by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Both engrossing and inconsequential.

If you are fine with “magical realism” (that usually does the trick for me), check out Weyward by Emilia Hart and anything by Alice Hoffman.

In the “Gothic” genre – another “take me away and enross me” genre – check out books by Diane Setterfield.

For small town stories told in simple language, look at books by Kent Haruf.

I hope things go well for you and your little boy.
