Okay so I’m trying to get a ‘baby gift’ for a colleague who is quite bookish. I do not want baby type books or parenting books so I’m hoping this sub will help me with what I’m looking for.
- I’d like it to be a fiction or non fiction story before anything else. This person is highly educated and reads a lot so I don’t really want the average series book, I’m looking more for an introspective literary work, think along the lines of Steinbeck Works. The work doesn’t have to be an overtly famous or ‘classic’ work I would just like it to be more timeless in nature I guess
- it would be great if there are themes of father/daughter, multicultural families (particularly American and Korean), long distance, art, loneliness. It doesn’t have to hit all these themes but if hits on a few that would be amazing
Essentially I want the book to be interesting enough that he would maybe pick it up to read it on his own and I want the themes of fatherhood or things like that to be more natural through a great story vs kind of forced as it is in parenting books or some series.
A great parallel book would be ‘She’s Come Undone’ by Wally Lamb. The actual story is about a girl going through her adolescence, but it touches on themes of obesity, loss, grief, betrayal, etc. it’s not gimmicky essentially.
Do these make sense? I hope so 😭if anyone knows of anything please let me know.
