I've been in a bit of a reading rut recently, so this summer I decided to solely read trashy thrillers. I love a mystery where I just have to get to the end to see what happens – even if they're not the most well written. However, I really need to expand again so I'm looking for recommendations – looking for something in a different genre that will still get me hooked. Here's what I read this summer and my ratings:

    • All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham – 4 stars
    • The Only One Left by Riley Sager – 3 stars
    • Mexian Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – 1 star (not a fan of body horror! Someone incorrectly told me this was a thriller instead of horror and I didn't do my research. Don't my a thriller that's gripping or even a little scary, but this one was way too much for me).
    • Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister – 3 stars (but I loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time by her – one of the few thrillers I've given 5 stars)
    • None of This is True by Lisa Jewell – 3.5 stars
    • The Housemaid by Freida McFadden – 3.5 stars

I also enjoy light sci-fi, historical fiction, and contemporary books, but I haven't been inspired to pick any up recently. My 5-star reads include Sea of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel, Kindred by Olivia Butler, The Idiot by Elif Batuman, Severance by Ling Ma, This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub, and Olga Dies Dreaming by Xóchitl González.

    1. Given your 5-star reads, I think you’d like Joy Williams, The Changeling. It’s surreal and dark and thought provoking – but also has some underlying humor.
