I'm looking for an uneasy book for the reader, with provocation and a content that challenges their morals. A character driven book, all about feelings and emotions.
A book that makes the reader think, "well… no good, but given their circumstances, I guess it's not that bad." The author tortures a bit the reader, takes him on a troubling but rewarding journey.
Maybe not a book that has too much in it. Gravity's rainbows might fits the requirements (not read yet), but there's a lot in in, it goes way beyond that, and this aspect isn't the main point of the book, I guess.
Also a book which stands its ground, that does not bow down all the way to the sanctimonous crowd, not a plot that feels compeled to do a full redemption arc for the mis-behaved character. A late half-way partial redemption is more than enough.
Not a book with rape, torture, child abuse (off-limit).
