You should try Blindsight by Peter Watts. Not only is it a deeply unsettling science fiction novel, it also presents ideas that I found to be incredibly thought provoking. The novel follows a group of modified humans sent to investigate an object in the Oort cloud.

There are some novelisations of the Alien series (Ridley Scott, Ripley, Nostromo etc) which vary in quality but do the job.

Would you prefer a book set in space or on another planet? Alien invasion or ‘the horror that fell to Earth’ might technically count, but I don’t know if The Colour Out of Space (Lovecraft) or IT* (Stephen King) is what you want?

Or would you accept things which are alien – i.e. things from other dimensions (John Dies at the End by Jason Pargin) or characters who are technically extra-terrestrial doing horrible things? (Use of Weapons by Iain M Banks)

Sometimes aliens are just scary because they’re so different (Semiosis by Sue Burke) but not malevolent, or acting with motivations which we can’t understand (Arrival by Ted Chiang)

Are there films or TV you want something similar to?

*I think the creature in IT was from space? Or another dimension? Or King’s cocaine nightmares?
