Novels that have the 17th century France or New France vibe/setting?
Can you recommend me any books that are set in the 17th century France or New France? I've just watched Barkskins and I find the time period really interesting and charming in its own way.
Frustratingly I’m not sure there are many options in English. In Quebec, that’s like half of all historical fiction!
I can only think of Suzanne Martel’s The King’s Daughter that’s been translated (but it’s YA). You may have better luck with colonial America, pre-Revolution, as a close equivalent. I’ve come across several novels referencing New France particularly around or post-Conquest (the Outlander series for example has long stretches set in Quebec) but I’ve not come across anything in English actually set in New France.

Barkskins is based on a book by Annie Proulx.
Angelique series by Serge and Anne Golon.
