I've been thinking about all the book series I've started but never completed, not because the author abandoned them (Kingkiller Chronicle :'( ), but because I just… stopped. I'm curious to know what series y'all have put down and never returned to, and why?
Here are a few of mine:
- Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – I loved the first/second books, but the third one just didn’t grab me the same way. I think it was the shift in setting and some of the political intrigue that threw me off. I might pick it up again because I do love the characters, but I’m not in a rush.
- A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin – I devoured the first three books, but halfway through the fourth, I just couldn't do it anymore. The narrative structure changed, focusing on different characters and slowing the pace. With the TV show wrapping things up (though not in a way that satisfied me), I’m not sure if I’ll go back, especially with the wait for the next book.
- The Dark Tower by Stephen King – Got to the middle of the series and then… life happened. I can’t even pinpoint why I stopped, but the momentum just faded. I’m torn about going back because I’ve heard the ending is controversial, and I’m not sure if I want to commit again only to be disappointed.
What about you? What series have you started and never finished? Do you think you'll ever return to them, or are they forever relegated to the "maybe someday" pile?
