I think A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini could be a good choice for you.
Mariam and Laila, initially have a tense relationship due to the circumstances forced upon them. However, as they face life in war-torn Afghanistan during the time of the Taliban, they develop a deep bond. This book is truly heartbreaking; I had to read it for school and I was sobbing in class.
Do check the trigger warnings before hand though.
