What’s your favorite twist on the typical mystery/whodunit formula?
Not looking for myseries with good plot twists but rather what mystery book has the best unique hook to change up this tried and true formula as a concept.
For instance Columbo tells you the killer at the get go.
Jean Hanff Korelitz’ **The Plot** is mystery/suspense. Its plot line is a writer steals the plot of a story from another author. The resultant book becomes a big seller, and the author becomes a target of an unknown who knows of the theft.
Unique hook: >!The written stolen story is slowly revealed to the reader adding insight into the mystery.!<

I like the twist from Misha Popp’s magic pies series…. Domestic abusers are killed by magic pies…

You might check out Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan. It starts with the burying of a body but it’s not what you think.
I really liked the main character, and thought it was an interesting take on the formula without getting all twisty for twist’s sake.
