The Horus Heresy books are good. Start with Horus Rising. (And remember, Magnus did nothing wrong and Russ has fleas.)
I liked the Ciaphas Cain books (he is a HERO OF THE IMPERIUM after all) but they might be a little too slapstick for your taste.

The Infinite and The Divine is an excellent book about the multi millennia rivalry between two Necrons.

I would start with the Eisenhorn trilogy, they are very beginner friendly while the Heresy books are very deep in what you need to know and also don’t really have a solid story start to finish (it’s like 50+ books)

Start from the start of Horus heresy. I’m not even a Warhammer fan and they were great

Yes, but I haven’t read any… one of my friends is really into Warhammer 40k novels though, I’ll ask her which ones she recommends

I started with the Horus Heresy books and working chronologically. I’m on the fifth book now. I ripped through books 1-4, really good, but now taking a step away from 5 for a bit as I like to change up what I read between fiction and non-fiction. I’ll be picking it back up probably next.
