My all time favorite book ever is Lonesome Dove. Years ago a friend told me about it and said "it's a western" I'll be honest I kind of shrugged and thought I'd never read a western, relating it to the bored days as a kid where I'd sit with my grandfather and be forced to watch black and white Westerns that to me came across extremely cheesy.
Needless to say, I started Lonesome Dove and went missing with friends and family until I finished it. Mind blowingly good.
Since then, I e read a lot of Westerns, like the oxbow incident, big sky, butchers crossing, the thicket and from these then got into McCarthy. Now, Blood Meridian is joined top fav with Lonesome Dove.
What are some of the best western books you've read? I really love a good bit of grit and violence in the stories. Reading the books I have, has taught me that the Western Americas was cut-throat and my days of romanticism of being a cowboy or a ranger are done. I'm too much of a big woos.
Please share some of your faves and why. I want to add a few to my bookshelves!!!
