I’m (27, f) starting to compile a collection of books for my two kids to read. Both love to be read to and my oldest (3 yo, daughter) is showing interest in listening to chapter books and stories with moral topics. I was an avid reader growing up and ate up every coming of age story for young girls I could get my hands on.
However, I’m struggling to think of coming of age books with male protagonist I could start putting away for my son (1.5). I would like to share books with him that have strong morals and ideas he can relate to.

Hatchet & the sequels
My Friend Flicka,
Where the Red Fern Grows,
Old Yeller,
Sounder
Big Red,
Gentle Ben,
*Hatchet* by Gary Paulson is perennially popular. *My Side of the Mountain* is another good one in the “boys wilderness epic” genre.
*Holes* by Lewis Sacher is also popular.
The car by gary paulsen! I love that book! A kid is abandoned by his parents, builds a kit car in the garage, and illegally drives it to try to find other family to stay with. He meets veterans on the way who introduce him to very interesting ideas about characters, and he grows as a person, and so does the reader!
