First of all, thanks for passing by! I’m a big fantasy fan, but have been a lot of time since I read some good, heavy sagas, so I would really appreciate some suggestions. For reference, I have enjoyed:
- TLOTRs
- Eric of Melnibone saga
- The Witcher
- Legends of the Otori
- Tales of the Earthsea
- Dragonlance
- Diablo’s novels
I’m looking for:
- Adult themes with adult leads (I have nothing against juvenile titles like Legends of Idhun or Eragon but I’m looking for more mature writing with a protagonist which is not a teenager)
- Worlds with an strong magic system/creatures.
- Bonus for Female protagonist (or well-written female characters)
- Bonus for Exotic locations/cultures (Not only European/Nord-based tales)
I’d like to avoid:
- Scifi mixed with Fantasy (F.e. Worlds like Xenoblade or Warhammer 40k)
- Time travel themes.
- Isekais.
- Light novels.
- Plot armor moments for the protagonists (so, I don’t mind characters dying)
Thanks in advance!! :3

Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb
It’s epic fantasy at it’s finest and is one story (17 books) that’s broken up into a few trilogies and a quadrility (meant to be read in order). The first book is The Assassin’s Apprentice.
Check out some spoiler free reviews of The Realm of the Elderlings, as a whole. It’s one of those series that’s held in very high regard. I’m about half way through it and I’m in love with it. It’s the kind of story that, as long as it is, you wish was longer simply due to how good it gets.
I will say that the main character starts off a little annoying but not that bad. It’s just part of his character arc.
