Ok, I'm making this post without wanting to sounds too snobby, haha. I love mystery novels (from "The Name of the Rose" to "Father Brown" to modern thrillers, etc) but I also love literature and great prose, especially Victorian and contemporary. I was wondering what contemporary mystery writers you would say encompass both a great story with beautiful prose?
Many Thanks!

John Mortimer, *Rumpole* novels and short stories. A unique style and massively entertaining.
Charles Palliser, *The Quincunx* – More Dickensian than Dickens and meticulously researched. Despite it’s length I could Not put it down till I was finished.
Arturo Perez-Reverte – everything. Sort of similar to Eco but probably somewhat more accessible to the average reader. very original, complex plots and a beautiful prose style
