So, my 9yr old daughter picked up the book that I had just placed on the coffee table while I went to grab something from the kitchen. She read the title aloud and her face immediately turned into the shocked emoji with big eyes and open mouth.

Daughter – Mom! You’re reading a bad book!

Me – Um, that’s not a bad book sweetie. It’s a popular bestseller book for grownups. Not for kids.

Daughter – But why would anyone be glad that their mom died??!!

Me – Well, sometimes unfortunately some mothers are very controlling and don’t let their children even eat what they want.

Daughter – Like when you don’t let me eat all of my Halloween candy stash??

Me – (slightly irritated) No. it’s not the same. It’s more serious than that. It’s about a mother controlling her daughter’s life way too much and not letting her choose her own career path, etc.

Daughter – Like when I said I want to invent real money tree that produces dollar bills that people can grow in their backyards and harvest real dollars off of it when they go out shopping. But you said that’s not a real career path.

Me – (annoyed) What’s your point? Would you rather want to be glad when your mom dies??!

We look eye to eye. She’s thinking!! And I’m waiting for an answer. She runs towards me, gives me a big hug and says – “no mom! I don’t want you to die. I love you and I will be very sad when you die”.

That was a tricky moment for me! Should I be happy that my daughter will be sad when I die?! Oh well, I’ll worry about that later. Nevertheless, I hugged my child tight and said – “I love you too my pumpkin! Yes, you may now go and eat some of your Halloween candy you’ve been eyeing” 😅

Note on the book – I know it’s already been a best seller and I joined the bandwagon a little late. This book is definitely going into the list of my all time favorites. When my kids are old enough to read mature content, I want them to read this story. Thanks Jennette McCurdy!

      I really enjoyed that book.

Jennette’s mother was terrible and so was everyone else in her life that saw and did NOTHING.
